There is little doubt that much of what we today think of as military ethics has religious roots, in the sense of building on theological reflection and discussion as well as statements and opinions from religious institutions and leaders. At the same time, professional military ethics is grounded in a profession-oriented understanding that is not dependent on any specific faith or belief, or any religious belief at all. How, then, should we think of the relationship between religion and military ethics?
