A mass mortality outbreaks in hatchery and farm reared Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Thailand was studied during January to October 2005. The clinical signs of affected postlarvae (PL) displayed an opaque whitish appearance of the muscle, particularly in the abdomen. Diseased prawns collected from grow-out ponds exhibited reddish-colored and mortalities. Histopathologically, both infected PL and prawns had areas of slight to moderate striated abdominal muscle necrosis. In spite of this, cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the connective tissue cells of most organs and tissues were also observed. Particularly, two types of inclusion bodies in hepatopancratic tubular epithelial of diseased prawn. One had hepatopancratic tubular epithelial nuclear enlargement and nucleolar and chromatin margination with eosinophilic nuclear inclusions. Another type showed Cowdry type A inclusions with a clear halo beneath the nuclear membrane. A transmission electron microscopy studied of striated abdominal muscle showed the presence of viral particles, icosahedral in shape, 22-25 nm in diameter similar to Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV). The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) determined that all of the infected PL and prawns tested in this studied were positive for MrNV and extra small virus (XSV). The two types of hepatopancreatic inclusions observed in diseased prawn in this studied indicated that they were probably caused by different viruses except MrNV and XSV which caused diseased problem in giant fresh water prawn industry in Thailand.
