The purpose of this qualitative research was to study perceptions of sexual identity among adolescents regarding gender identity, sexual orientation, and sexual relation or desire, including factors related to adolescent sexual identity development and an appropriate sexual identity program for adolescents. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with key informants were used in data collections. Participants included 60 adolescents, 17 teachers, and 21 parents from secondary schools, high schools, and universities in Changwat Chiang Mai. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The findings of this study demonstrated that some adolescents have grown up feeling insecure about their sexual identity that could lead to inappropriate sexual behaviors. There were several factors related to sexual identity development including role models in family, presentation of inappropriate sexual identity in the mass media, and the influences of consumerism society and peer group. As a result, important issues and concerns raised from adolescents, parents, teachers, and researchers suggested that a sexual identity prototype program for Thai adolescents is greatly needed and would be started with adolescents themselves as well as creating a positive environment that enables adolescents to develop their own sexual identity with involvement from all stakeholders.
