Harnessing Teacher's Wisdom for Evidence-Based Practice: Standardization Data from the Sensory Profile School Companion

Although the Sensory Profile has provided standardized information about children's sensory processing patterns, the information informs us about everyday life at home and in the community from parents. Therapists working in public schools have been needing information about children's responses to sensory experiences at school. The Sensory Profile School Companion provides standardized information reported by teachers and so adds an important perspective. This article provides a summary of the standardization studies that form the evidence base for the Sensory Profile School Companion. Descriptive, validity, reliability, and factor analytic studies are summarized. New concepts emerged called “School Factors” that seem to represent the teacher's view of students as various types of learners in the classroom. Comparative studies between the Sensory Profile from the parents and the Sensory Profile School Companion from the teacher suggest that the Sensory Profile measures are providing information about the child in context and point out the importance of considering context in assessment and intervention planning. The article also presents strategies for using the new concepts in school-based practice.
