摘要

Greetings, and welcome to Glasgow, Scotland, and the 97th AnnualnCouncil Meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists. It has trulynbeen an honor and privilege to serve as the Society’s president this pastnyear, and I want to thank the membership for entrusting me with thisnresponsibility. As with the shortened meeting last year in Mobile, thisnyear’s BSP-ASP joint meeting with the International Congress of Parasitologyn(ICOPA) has not exactly been business-as-usual for us. Largelynbecause of the international venue of the ICOPA meeting and a lowernthan anticipated member turnout, we will not be having our traditionalnauction, student paper sessions and ‘‘best paper’’ competitions, or graduatenstudent symposium. However, for those members here in attendance, nthe ICOPA promises an outstanding program of parasitologicalnresearch covering the full gamut of subdisciplines, including an excitingnPresidential Symposium on innate immunity in vectors (mosquitoes, ntsetse flies, snails) to parasitic infection. Thanks to Steve Nadler, ASPnvice president, for organizing this symposium. I would also like to extendna special welcome and thanks to all of the ASP officers, Councilnmembers, and regional society and affiliate organization representativesnwho were able to attend this meeting. I realize that we are missing annumber of Council attendees, but I anticipate that we will still engagenin vigorous discussion of the issues before us and carry on the businessnof the Society as best we can.nOne of the issues that has percolated in the background for a numbernof years is the slow but steady decline in ASP membership, and it is antopic that has been raised by numerous past presidents. This issue was,nin part, the stimulus for the ASP member survey initiated almost 2 yrnago upon recommendation by the Priorities and Planning Committee.nAs stated in its preamble, the purpose of this survey was to provide annupdate on what the 2006 ASP looks like (demographics of our membership)nand gain insights into how the ASP is doing in promotingngeneral parasitology, providing service to its members, and in attractingnand retaining new members. The survey also provided feedback on thenjournal, annual meetings, the Web site, and other society features thatnmay have direct (or indirect) effects on membership. Much of my timenover the past year has been involved in survey data collection, collation, nand preliminary analysis. At present, the results are being discussedevaluated by an ad hoc strategic planning committee consisting of immediatenPast-President Dennis Minchella, President Elect Steve Kayes,nVice President Steve Nadler, Council member Cynthia Chappell, past-nStudent Council member-at-large Michelle Steinauer, past-Councilnmember Mark Siddall, and me. Unfortunately we were unable to meetnas a group at the Mobile meeting, thanks to (Hurricane) Dennis, butnhave been ‘‘meeting’’ via e-mail over the past few months. In addition,nSteve Kayes, in his capacity as president elect, discussed the surveynand issues raised by it at the Southeastern Society of Parasitologistsnmeeting, while I have done the same at this year’s meetings of thenNortheastern Association of Parasitologists, Northern California Parasitologists, nand the Annual Midwest Conference of Parasitologists.nThese have provided additional opportunities for valuable input to thenplanning committee, as we continue to formulate a set of recommendationsnor proposals for consideration by the council and the membershipnas a whole. Unfortunately, owing to time constraints (on my part),nthe ad hoc committee has not yet completed its work. However, by thenAugust meeting, I am planning to incorporate a summary of our findingsnand recommendations/ideas as part of my presidential address. Itnis hoped that the ideas proposed by this committee, combined with
