Thank you, Mike, for that kind introduction, and manynthanks to the membership of the American Society of Parasitologistsn(ASP) for the honor and privilege of serving as yournpresident this year. It has been especially good fortune to benserving during a year in which the ASP is meeting jointly withnthe British Society of Parasitology in conjunction with the 2006nInternational Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA) here in Glasgow,nwhich promises to be a very exciting meeting. However,nI must admit that choosing a topic suited to this venue for mynaddress was a bit of a challenge. The title I finally chose,n‘‘Thinking globally, acting locally,’’ was adapted from thenphrase ‘‘Think globally, act locally’’ coined by environmentalnscientist Rene Dubos, who promoted the idea that in addressingnglobal environmental problems one has to first consider thenunique conditions that are working at the local level to formulatenaction plans (Eblen and Eblen, 1994). With this ICOPAnmeeting as a backdrop, I thought it most fitting to highlight thentremendous opportunities we have as parasitologists to thinknglobally about our discipline, while at the same time for ASPnas a ‘‘local’’ organization to take an introspective look at whonwe are, and how we operate as a society to take advantage ofnthe many opportunities and obligations presented to us as partnof this global community.
