摘要

The relationship between "competent authorities" and the Natura 2000 network is an important yet sometimes confusing one. Clarity on this relationship was provided in an important judgment delivered by Owen J. in R. (on the application of Akester) v Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs(''Akester").' This article considers the legal reasoning contained within this judgment and draws a number of significant practical implications for those who engage with the provisions of nature conservation law in the United Kingdom.
