摘要

Amy Chua's Political tribes and Lilliana Mason's Uncivil agreement represent, each in their own way, the tip of the spear in what we might call 'tribal psychologism.' The attack is an important one, because it ought to force the social sciences to go all-in on deciding a number of serious questions that have been left to fester. It will almost certainly not do so, and there is perhaps no greater evidence of this than the acceptance and currency the two books here already have. Both books argue their positions finely, but the theoretical assumptions from both about human decision-making and interaction effects from the decision environment are not in proportion to the stories each book tells. Both books have been allowed to skate on this fact, because social science research has, with the exception of a few daredevils, allowed itself to utterly skate on questions of psychological reduction and any type of standard for the consistency of social science research with the natural sciences. At some point social science is going to have to confront choices on these questions en masse if there is to be a future for coherent and convincing fields of study.
