The first wave of insurgency studies was undoubtedly influenced by the national liberation struggles taking place in Indochina, Africa and elsewhere from the 1950 and into the 1970s. The past fifteen years has seen renewed interest in insurgency studies, a trend not unrelated to events in the Middle East and Africa, and to the persistence of Cold War insurgencies after the so-called 'end of history' was announced by Fukuyama (1992). Much of this body of work has been concerned primarily with recruitment and causes, along with debates influenced by theories such as greed and grievance (Berdal and Malone 2000), the new wars paradigm (Kaldor 1999), and the economic theory of conflict (Collier and Hoeffler 2000).
