Although neoliberalism has long been an object of critical scholarly investigation (e.g. Friedrich 1955), in recent years a notable shift has occurred in academia: a clearly delineated field of critical scholarship has emerged that we may call 'neoliberalism studies'. Many signs indicate this shift. For one thing, the body of literature that deals with neoliberalism is growing at an impressive rate, cutting across a variety of disciplines and bringing together a multitude of political perspectives. For another, publishers have started commissioning handbooks of neoliberalism that combine critical depth with introductory breadth (e.g. Cahill et al. 2018, Springer, Birch and MacLeavy 2016). Additionally, as with any academic field worth its salt, neoliberalism studies also has its detractors, according to whom the concept of neoliberalism is vacuous and its study senseless (e.g. Phelps and White 2018).
