摘要

In an era marked by spectacles of political violence that are disseminated both vividly and rapidly to international audiences, it is rational that the discipline of political science would focus first and foremost on mass terror incidents. Whether such acts of violence are successful or not is peripheral to the central concern (see Abrahms 2006) - the fact of the matter is that the display is compelling and warrants scrutiny, debate and contestation. Michael Loadenthal's The politics of attack: communiques and insurrectionary violence is, however, something quite different. This book, as Loadenthal acknowledges, contains some discussion of our archetypal political violence but is - in essence - 'the story of painted walls and broken windows' (p. 11). More specifically, this is a story about the synthesis between the 'act' and the 'text', or the communiques that serve to capture the narrative, rationale and ethos underpinning instances of insurrectionary violence. Whilst a range of existing works present insurrectionary discursive communiques (for instance, see Mishal and Aharoni 1994, Laqueur 2004, Marlin 2004, Dohrn et al. 2006, Pickering 2007), Loadenthal's book is, arguably, the first critical analysis of a 'canon' of insurrectionary discourse. Applying what we might term a flirtation with post-structuralist approaches, this book is therefore also a story of internationalised hierarchies of power, and the forces (and voices) that seek to confront perceived inequitable distributions of economic and political power.
