摘要

While many scholars have argued for nationalism's gradual demise, which would be inevitably brought on by the rise of globalization, mass migration, and a post-national order characterized by individualization and a weakening of collective identities (e.g. Dogan 1994, Soysal 1994, Haas 1997, Beck and Beck-Gernsheim 2002, Bauman 2006, Giddens 2007), Malesevic's previous work has consistently argued that globalization has augmented the expansion of nationalisms as a world-wide phenomenon. In Grounded nationalisms, he presents a comprehensive theoretical framework for the understanding of nationalism's long-term dynamics. The book traces how nationalism has become a mass phenomenon, analyzing its rise and transformation over the long term. He argues that nationalism is 'a fully fledged ideology and a dominant form of subjectivity in the modern era' (p. 3); 'a super-thick ideology, a meta-ideological doctrine' (p. 4), 'a highly pliable ideological doctrine that has endured many historical changes and was able to adapt, transform and survive', thereby becoming increasingly grounded in everyday life (p. 20). Because the nation continues to be the 'dominant cognitive framework for understanding wide social relations', while the nation represents the 'fundamental unit of human solidarity and political legitimacy' (p. 4), nationalism has developed into an organizational and ideological formation in which its ideas and practices are increasingly stable (p. 20). In Grounded nationalisms, Malesevic seeks to understand how nationalism has become so potent and durable, why the nation state continues to be the central organizing mode of social and political life, and why nationalism is still the dominant form of collective subjectivity (p. 8).
