This year marks one hundred years since the ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allowing American women the right to vote. 2020 is also a year in which politics in the US matters: the Trump Presidency, a raging pandemic that is expected to claim 400,000 lives in the US by the end of the year, the invigoration of civil rights movements such as Black Lives Matter, and the ongoing demands from women's movements all point towards the 2020 Presidential election as one that matters, and matters particularly to those who have been disadvantaged by recent politics, including women and especially women of colour. Yet, even as the urgency and apparent importance of the upcoming election intensifies, challenges to women's role in politics and even their right to vote have emerged. For instance, Abby Johnson, a speaker at the 2020 Republican National Convention advocated for Head-of-Household voting that would exclude many women from being able to cast their own vote (Becker 2020). Organisations such as Men Go Their Own Way (see MGTOW.com), an online community that advocates for men to isolate themselves from women, have also witnessed a growing membership base of men who feel disenfranchised by the perceived power of women and aim to 'reclaim' their 'sovereignty'. The 'women's vote' is thus perceived, as historically women themselves have been, as both desirable and dangerous.
