摘要

I first heard of Dr. David Healy when I moved from the United States to my home country of Canada to begin a doctorate of philosophy degree at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Having studied how physical activity and recreation can be therapeutic for adolescents with clinical depression (Dieser & Ruddell, 2002), I became aware of the Toronto Affair, in which the University of Toronto (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) inappropriately voided Healy's academic contract because his scholarship highlighted the political nature of pharmaceutical companies' behavior in trying to silence the voices of people who provide fair-minded criticism of pharmaceutical research (e.g., CAUT Bulletin, 2002; Healy, 2002). As a current professor of human services who still has an academic interest in using leisure and recreation as an adjunctive therapy for people with depression, when I finished reading Dr. Healy's book, I felt compelled to share it with others in the human services professions. Let Them Eat Prozac has paramount professional and academic implications for the field of human services.
