摘要

In the past, the leadership of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has taken positions on controversial political issues such as the invasion of Iraq, torture and the US Patriot Act. It was surprising, therefore, that it recently insisted that the names of leading neocon-servative intellectuals and officials be deleted from a guest editorial written for the journal Social Work on the ground that their inclusion could jeopardize the association's tax exempt status. The nature of the guest editorial and the apparent contradiction between the leadership's previous advocacy efforts and its refusal to include the names is discussed in this Soapbox. The need to clarify the advocacy responsibilities of professional organizations such as NASW is briefly considered.
