Prior to the first year of the twenty-first century, borders and borderland studies were a quiet backwater of political geography, especially in the case of the long and peaceful frontier between Canada and the United States. But with the coming of free trade in 1989 and the subsequent North American Free Trade Act of 1994 (NAFTA), interest dramatically increased. Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, awareness of border issues and research on this topic has fairly exploded. Yet in spite of a heightened awareness of the drastic changes in the "world's longest undefended border," there have remained some serious information and research gaps. Beyond Walls: Re-Inventing the Canada-United States Borderlands is a major contribution to filling in one of the most serious of these gaps. In this, the seventh volume in Ashgate's Border Regions Series, Canadian geographers Victor Konrad and Heather Nicol artfully explore some of the darker and least understood niches of North American border studies.
