Experimental studies were carried out on development of low cost adsorbent materials for removing phenol from waste water followed by comparison of their adsorption characteristics with activated carbon. Simulated studies were conducted for generating waste biomass after solvent extraction. 6r activation GPFMAC (German Process for manufacturing activated carbon) was adopted with some modifications. Eqilibr ium experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of the prepared activated carbon from raw biomass (sawdust and corncob) as well as biomass residue (after extraction from ginger and neem) were higher when compared with raw biomass, charred biomass, biomass residue char. Results of these experiments have been reported in the present communication.
