Interactions between retropropulsion exhaust and blunt body aerodynamics have been investigated since the early 1950s. Extensive wind-tunnel experiments in the 1960s and early 1970s developed the technology to near the level of maturity it has today. Experimental results consistently show significant benefit (preservation of aerodynamic drag) for peripheral retropropulsion configurations at low thrust coefficients. The literature also demonstrates little or no axial force augmentation beyond that provided by the retropropulsive thrust for configurations with the nozzle located along the body centerline.
