Damkohler's personal background is first outlined, followed by an examination of his early pioneering work in the 1930s on reacting flow, which led to the basic nondimensional similitude parameters that now bear his name. We then survey the role that these parameters have played in dealing with finite reaction-rate effects in acoustics, combustion, and the aerothermodynamics of hypervelocity flight vehicles and their propulsion system. Emphasis is placed on the aerospace sciences and the value of the Damkohler number not only in understanding And correlating experimental data, but also in conducting efficient numerical studies and analyses of reacting-gas Flowfields.
