Challenges in the Development and Scale-up of Monopropellant Hydrazine Production for Satellite Propulsion

摘要

Monopropellant grade Hydrazine (99.5 % purity) is developed for use in the 1 N and 11 N thrusters of all 1RS class of satellites. Hydrazine required for space grade applications in anhydrous form is not available in the country. A process has been developed for converting the commercially available hydrazine hydrate (64% Hydrazine) into pure hydrazine by dehydration of hydrazine hydrate with Sodium Hydroxide and separating the pure hydrazine by vacuum distillation. A plant with a production capacity of 40 kg/day is designed with advances features, to meet satellite requirements. The challenges in the development and scale up of the hydrazine process include the synthesis route, design parameters, equipment design, optimisation of process conditions, plant safety, facility build-up, effluent treatment and finally meeting the stringent monopropellant grade specifications. The overall design aspects for the scale up of hydrazine plant and results of qualification trials are discussed in this paper.
