The evolution in the understanding of the physics of space silicon solar cells and the parallel development in the technology of its manufacture for the past four and a half decades are summarized. Higher efficiency, lower mass, higher radiation tolerance and lower temperature of operation are the main achievements gained in the above-mentioned time.
