Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) can be stretched at low tension without causing observable crystallization above the glass transition temperature. The resulting increased length with no measurable change in orientation is called superdrawing. Circumferential superdrawing of hollow PET fibres in hot water has been demonstrated to increase the fibre voids. The internal pressure forcing the void to grow is due to a combination of temperature-induced air expansion and water permeation into the void. The use of steam to replace hot water in superdrawing offers many advantages, particularly in improved process operability. In the present work, experimental devices were fabricated and procedures to use steam in superdrawing of hollow PET fibres were developed. The tests included both batch processing and continuous processing. The presence of liquid water on the fibre surface was found to play an important role in steam superdrawing. Experimental results show that the void ratio of PET hollow fibres processed by steam superdrawing with prewetting is similar to that of fibres superdrawn in hot water. Steam superdrawing may be operated at higher pressures than with hot water, leading to even higher fibre void ratios.
