As the population of the UK ages, retailers may feel the need to re-target their operations towards those age groups in the population, which are expanding. The paper examines the availability of data on the purchasing power enjoyed by various age groups in an attempt to evaluate the appropriateness of a re-targeting policy in the fashion sector. The paper concludes that the data base for such a policy is ectremely weak, and that the use of predicted changes is shares of population taken by various age groups as a guide to their economic desirability in shares of population taken by various age groups as a guide to their economic desirability as target markets is far from straightforward - in particular, that the predicted changes cannot be confidently expected to be related to any change in the centre of gravity of fashion leadership.
