By 2030, China will complete a systemof expressways connecting all its cities with populationsnofmore than 200 000—an achievement that is all themore impressive considering that the đrstnChinese expressways were built in 1988. ăe completed expressway network will be longernthan the United States’ interstate highway system. Furthermore, road building in China is notnlimited to freeways, as nearly 119000 miles of rural roads were paved during the past decade.nWhile most of the new roads connect the busy and populous coastal areas, the government isninvesting heavily in the rural interior as well.
