摘要

'From the Ground Up' is a comprehensive study of the impetus of the community garden movement in New York City, from 1980 to the present. The book is well organised, addressing the neighbourhood conditions that led to the community gardening movement and the management structures that take parcels of land from the private to the public realm. It also explores the non-quantifiable benefits of community gardening for both the self esteem of individuals and their evolution into community citizens. If there is a shortcoming to this book, it is that the author weaves his analysis into the theories of Harvey and H. Lefebvre, which, at least in my opinion, makes portions of the book difficult to read, without adding much to our understanding of the community gardening movement.
