摘要

Almost all imaging applications, whether analog or digital, are carried out with the ultimate goal of being displayed on a display device. For many decades, the dominant display technology was the cathode ray tube (CRT). The range of intensities that can be usefully displayed with this technology is limited. At the upper end of the scale, the employed phosphors limit how much light can be emitted. At the lower end, low luminance values can be displayed at intervals that can no longer be discerned by the human visual system. The limit on the dynamic range of CRTs means that digital images do not normally have to be encoded by more than eight bits per pixel per color channel to cover this range. This gives about two orders of magnitude of dynamic range.
