摘要

Software has become ubiquitous. It is used to manage complex systems, to integrate and present diverse media, to control everyday appliances, and supports a variety of professional and personal tasks. A corresponding need is for languages and tools that enable modelers, developers and end users to fully understand, formally analyze and verify, and interact with the software artifacts they encounter in these many settings and activities. To meet this need, visual and diagrammatic languages, as well as spatially based metaphors, have been a solution of choice for almost three decades. Equally important, a continuous interplay between theoretical research and industrial development has fostered new results and has facilitated the diffusion of languages and tools based on these languages.
