In May 2005 I travelled with a fellow Guild member, Jane Nicholls, to Japan for the Sixth International Shibori Symposium and Technical Tours. This was a trip we had been planning for several months, a first visit to Japan and a new cultural experience for both of us. The Symposium and Tours were organised by Yoshiko Wada and her team on behalf of the World Shibori Network (WSN), from their United States office in conjunction with contacts in Japan. Information was disseminated to delegates via the internet and through regional representatives. The two day Symposium was held at Tama Art University in Hachiouji, a city to the west of Tokyo. This was a particularly special venue for the Symposium in that Japan has a strong shibori tradition. The word shibori first came into use in the Edo period (1603 -1867), although resist-dye techniques are thought to have been practiced prior to the sixth century AD. Contemporary shibori is now practiced world-wide, and the first International Symposium took place in Nagoya in 1992. Symposia have subsequently been held in India, Chile, Australia and the UK. This symposium attracted textile makers and enthusiasts, academics and students from all parts of the world, all with a common interest in the art of shibori: a means of embellishing cloth through shaping and securing it before dyeing.
