The ancient empire of Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, tends to be connected in peoples' minds over the last two decades with either famine and the beneficiary of Bob Geldof's original Live Aid concert or, possibly more recently, with references in the press about the Italians' return of the enormous obelisk to the old capital, Axum, from where they took it in 1937. Furthermore, there have been appeals from Ethiopia to Britain to match the Italians and 'graciously' return the many artefacts commandeered during the punitive expedition to Ethiopia under General Sir Robert Napier in 1868.
