In 2001 a group of English people visited the Yellow sect Tibetan monastery of Ganden Tubchen Chokhorling in Litang city, Sichuan Province, China. Originally this area was part of Tibet and ruled from Lhasa. China annexed this region in the 20th century and incorporated it into Sichuan Province. Litang County remains a dominantly Tibetan ethnic region as the county is at an altitude of over 4,000 metres which precludes Han Chinese living here comfortably. The local people are Tibetan Kharnpas. The surrounding area has rich pastureland, and large herds of sheep and yak graze on the lush grass. Consequently, the nomadic herders are well-off. Traders selling butter, cheese, wool and carcasses have also grown rich and trade extensively in the Tibetan region. The town has an unusual air of prosperity.
