Reactions and chanractristics of FASTMET(r), a direct reduction process of using carbon composite iron ore pellets with a rotary hearth furnace, are outlined. Fundamentla experiments showed that metallization of 17 mm diameter pellels reached more than 93/100 within about 12 minutes under the conditions of 1 200-1 300 deg.C and N_2 gas atmosphere. The process flow of a demonstration plant with a 2,5 t/h capacity, commis- sioned in the second half of 1995, was also presented.
