A dividable, portable type robot has been applied to large work pieces which have weld joints in narrow spaces. Increased portability is made possible by the use of a light weight manipulator, a dividing and coalescing mechanism, a long control cable and a decrease in the number of cables. Vertical welding function with the arc-through sensor, shift function by external signal, and a carriage for the robot are all useful for expanding the application range of portable type robots.
