In order to reduce dioxins emission from fluidized bed type MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerators, the mixing performance between secondary air and unhurried gas in the freeboard has been evaluated using a CFD simulation method. Calculations were carried out in originative conditions which were non-reactive but included thermal effects. A new concept which utilized a large recirculation eddy in the freeboard was proposed and optimized by the CFD calculation. The experiments were carried out using pilot scale incinerators which had a premix burner instead of a fluidized bed, to compare the combustion performance between existing and proposed configurations. The experimental evaluation results indicated that the proposed incinerator has notably improved combustion performance.
