On the chopping block were 18 large street trees—10 poplars and eight ginkgoes—where officials at the School of Architecture and Design of Beijing Jiaotong University wished to build a glass enclosure in front of their building. But a design team that included architecture faculty Zhongzhong Zeng and Yongquan Chen with Bo Zhang, ASLA, a visiting professor, landscape architect, and assistant professor at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, made a different pitch. "We proposed something open, to keep all those trees," Zhang says. The Tree-Umbrella Open Space, made of Douglas fir, was prefabricated in parts and erected on the site in 10 days in 2017. It stands on a raised platform that lets rainwater enter the ground below and protects the trees from soil compaction. Parts of the pavilion are covered, and other parts are open for the tree trunks and to admit light People use the space for classes, exhibitions, tai chi, sitting, and, naturally, given its striking form, for taking selfies.
