And never saw a city until he attended the University of Washington in Seattle. Around Fairbanks, Olin learned a love of landscape from many mentors, including a mining engineer with whom he had a high school internship. Living in a place that is almost unimaginably remote in today's America, Olin learned to pay attention to learning and cultural change. "When you're growing up on the edge of civilization, you feel you have to pay attention to what's going on in civilization," he says. He lived in New York City during the 1960s, moved back to the West Coast "with a hand-built camper and a flat file," and eventually cofounded a landscape architecture firm with his colleague, Robert Hanna, in 1976.
