In 1909, an alley between State and Astor Streets in Chicago was paved in wood blocks treated with creosote. Because the blocks were worn by age and traffic, a restoration of the alley sought to find a modern version of those wood pavers that could withstand weather and cars without a carcinogenic creosote coating.
