摘要

The full and more correct title of the book in question, The Wild Garden: Out-Groves and Shrubberies Made Beautiful by the Naturalising of Hardy Exotic Plants, with a Chapter on the Garden of British Wildflowers, is less a title and more of a manifesto. Originally published in 1870 by the gardener and writer William Robinson, the book very clearly sets out its author's view of everything he felt was amiss with gardens of the period and how he thought this should best be remedied. The trends that so displeased Robinson were for formal bedding schemes of glasshouse-raised tender plants and over-manicured shrubberies. The scale of the gardens Robinson describes is far beyond most people's domestic experience. He describes wooded walks and groves and the wilder margins of country estates. However, he also deals with public spaces, parks and gardens and he especially takes aim at London's public spaces.
