The central question of this study is whether abstract semantic properties of verbs are a classificatory criterion in the mental lexicon. This study compares classifications of German verbs based on empirical language data with classifications based on semantic models using 35 verbs taken on the basis of Schumacher's classification (1986). We consider four semantic classifications: the classification presented in Schumacher (1986) who used concrete lexical semantic properties of verbs, and three classifications that use abstract semantic properties of verbs related to aspect and transitivity: a Vendler (1967) inspired typology, a classification using Dowty's (1991) concepts of prototypical thematic roles and our own distinction of five verb classes (Richter and van Hout 2010) We used four empirical data sets for investigating classification patterns of verbs. Two data sets were obtained from co-occurrence patterns in corpus data (usage based), the other two were obtained from human judgments (user based). Our results show that the classifications inferred from the user based and the usage based data sets can be explained to a large degree by semantic models built on abstract verb properties. We draw the conclusion that abstract semantic properties have a classificatory value in the mental lexicon.
