A Participatory Perspective on Readers' Narrative Experiences

摘要

The participatory perspective on narrative processing conceptualizes readers as active participants in their experiences of narrative worlds. To demonstrate some implications of this perspective, we focus on an excerpt from the novel, The Starboard Sea (Dermont, 2012). The excerpt provides a moment that is ripe for reader participation. We discuss how readers respond to the mystery the excerpt creates and how they are responsible for the intensity of their own feelings of suspense. We also discuss how readers' identification with the characters unfolds as a consequence of participation.
