Seldom discussed and often mis-understood, the recording of maintenance functions is as important as the maintenance itself. There are two regs that put the responsibility of record keeping squarely on the shoulders of owners/operators. The first is FAR 91.405(B) that makes the owner/operator responsible to ensure that the mechanic makes the required entries and signs the work off as approved for return to service. The second rule, FAR 91.417, requires aircraft owners to maintain maintenance records for each propeller, engine, airframe, and accessory. Plus inspection and overhaul records, AD status, and replacement schedules of life-limited parts.
