A 68-year-old Mooney pilot was flying his non-turbo Mooney across from the west side of the Sierras to Mammoth Lakes airport California at 7,000 feet field elevation. I have made the hop many times in winter to go skiing, staying below 12,000 feet MSL trying to stay out of the wave, sometimes having to put the gear down in my Bonanza to loose altitude, staying as close to maneuvering speed as possible in severe turbulence. Gear speed is phenomenally high in newer Bonanzas and you can come down under control like a stone, akin to speed brakes. The technique is in the POH of the V35B. In the case of the Mooney, radar showed it to have reached 17,000 feet in mixed weather conditions at mid-day before starting an erratic descent to crash at around 10,000 feet. He had no supplemental oxygen. Most Mooneys do not have such high controlled decent speeds or such drag-inducing options, and pilot hypoxia is listed as the probable cause. Know your plane's capabilities intimately or a mountain wave could be your undoing in very strong up-drafts as well as down-drafts and turbulence.
