The scenario is to arrive at the airport to find your trusty four-year-old battery flat. Worse yet would be to find a relatively new battery dead from sitting for the past two months. What's the next thing to do? Find a friend and jump-start that puppy (or get a jump from the FBO). If you do, kiss-off both the old battery as well as the newer battery to a significantly reduced useful life before it flunks the FAA capacity test or has anywhere near the reserve capacity you would need should your alternator fail while IFR or night or even in busy controlled airspace. An alternator-based charge into a dead or badly discharged battery hammers the battery internals with far more heat via high current than is good for battery life. The reason high alternator current does not damage a reasonably charged battery is because the internal resistance of a discharged battery is significantly lower (proportionally lower, since the resistance of a battery is under one Ohm).
