The crankcase is the cast-aluminum "shell" that encloses the crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods, gears, and lubrication system of the engine while also holding the cylinders rigidly in place. All cylinders bolt directly to the crankcase; the accessory case bolts to the back of the crankcase; the oil sump (oil pan) bolts to the underside of the crankcase; and certain other items (such as prop governors, oil coolers, and/or gear-driven alternators) bolt directly to the case as well. (Note, on some engines the accessory case is integral with the crankcase, while on others it is a bolt-on design.) On the inside, the crankcase serves as a conduit for the pressure lubrication system that provides oil to main bearings, tappets, camshaft journals, and accessories. (Note some items get splash lube only.) It also serves as a containment structure for the crankshaft and main bearings.
