Winters are a fun time to fly, but you often don't find out how poorly your heater system works until your first cold weather flight and you freeze your butt off. So before we find things out the hard way, let's look at what we can do to improve the situation. Any exhaust leak in the engine compartment can find it's way into the cabin. Moreover, those "porcupine" like heater cores are especially prone to corrosion and exhaust leaks. The Bonanza as a classic example of this design. The heater core should be pressure tested from time to time. That's why one of the new electronic CO detectors is a must for winter flyers, and Cessna owners must never block or tape over wing root air distribution outlets. Fix them instead, and only use the resources of certified aviation welding repair stations used to these products.
