The owner-assisted annual should be treated as a learning experience rather than a method to save money. With a few annuals under your belt as an aircraft owner you will have a feel for what needs to be done and what areas to check prior to the annual. Find an inspector that is familiar with the type of aircraft you have and agree on a price or estimate before the work is started. Repairing your aircraft as the need arises is best as any defects brought to the annual will be cause for rejection or delays in completing the inspection as well as additional costs.
