We have encountered an interesting increase in reader questions from owners who have installed digital engine monitors in their heretofore sparse factory instrumented panels in their typical basic older Cessnas and Pipers. With that glowing digital instrument face now blinking before their eyes, the idea of just what are the right temperatures to operate their engine for the longest engine life seems to be occupying owner thoughts. It's a good idea as long as you use the right numbers. Many analog instruments only have colors. While EGT and CHT are the prime digital enhancements, the question we get is what normally is the best CHT, EGT and oil temperatures to look for? We'll address all three with the primary orientation to normally-aspirated engines.
