Most small single- and twin-engine aircraft incorporate landing gear struts that are designed to support the airplane for ground operations while providing shock-absorbing features that reduce the stress transmitted to the airframe on landing. The venerable Piper Super Cub is an exception, using rubber bungees. During taxi and when operating on smooth surfaces, the aircraft rides on a cushion of compressed air, although nitrogen is preferred (nitrogen is used because it is an inert gas and contains little, if any, moisture). Whether you use nitrogen or air depends on whether you are using the common strut pump, which simply acts as a magnifier of a shop air compressor or a nitrogen bottle with a high pressure gas regulator. Any references that follow to "air" or "nitrogen" are interchangeable in this article, though nitrogen is preferred.
