Last issue we covered the disassembly of our subject Cessna 150M nose strut for repair of leaky strut seals. This closing article will concentrate on the reassembly. But before we proceed, we want to remind you to be sure that there really is a leaking oil seal before tearing the strut down. Even mechanics sometimes jump to the conclusion that the problem is fluid or fluid only. Be sure that it is not just a leaking Schrader air valve-a much simpler repair, or that the Schrader air valve may also need to be replaced at the same time as well as the strut oil seals. The air valve is located in the top, or next to the top on some aircraft, of the strut assembly. This is not a bicycle type part, but rather a high pressure component requiring an aircraft quality replacement part designed for high pressure air. This was the problem with our C-206 a few months ago. As far as strut seal replacement parts, Cessna makes a standard seal kit for the strut on the C-150,152,172, and 182. The kit is an SK-172-1 and contains all of the seals and cirdips necessary to rebuild the nose strut.
