"Willing suspension of disbelief." That's what turns a trip to a theme park into a true immersion experience. Visitors put logic aside and buy into the proposition that they're really there. Part of that suspension of disbelief at Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford, Dearborn, MI., was the faithful recreation of street lighting. Lighting upgrades were a key part of the $65 million renovation of this theme park, of sorts, where tourists can take a look inside Edison's laboratory, hop a ride in an authentic Model T and experience 300 years of American history, through exhibits, demonstrations, programs and reenactments. Designer Illuminating Concepts, Farmington Hills, MI, was asked to use lighting as the catalyst for the renovation and reinvention of the "strolling environment"—a pastoral, almost rural setting, between historic structures. The lighting program, which won IC and The Henry Ford the Themed Entertainment Association Thea Award for 2005, was to include not only a restoration of a handful 80-year-old lights (only 18 on the property), but the recreation of 367 historically appropriate luminaires. In addition, the design needed to include a means of dimming or controlling the light sources in order to add drama to several night time live events, especially at Halloween and Christmas.
