Construction of the Millennium High School is a response to an aggressive revitalization plan for the downtown portion of New York City after September 11, 2001. By taking advantage of the abundant amount of empty office space in the area, the school now occupies a corner of an office building's first floor as a separate entry, gallery, multipurpose room and pre-function space as well as three entire floors (11,12,13)―a grand total of 100, 000 sq ft of space. Construction took place from July-August of 2003, and the school officially opened last fall. The successful design and construction at Millennium High School was accomplished through the application of private sector experience combined with a thoughtful community consensus building process provided by The Lower Manhattan Development Council (LMDC). The LMDC provided private funding from many businesses, corporations and financial institutions in the immediate area to fill the need for secondary education facilities in the downtown district.
